ProofreadingNot to be confused with editing, proofreading, done well and by an experienced expert, is a straightforward task which is nevertheless essential if your work is to do its job. Whether it's a novel, an article or a tweet, remember that bad grammar, poor spelling, inappropriate use of punctuation, and inaccurate references will destroy any hope you have of impressing a reader.
No matter how many times you read your work, you will always miss something. In most cases, the more times you read it, the more likely you are to ‘assume’ that what you've written is correct. What you need is an experienced proofreader, who is the sort of person who picks up a pen when presented with any document, in readiness for inevitable errors. Who corrects newsreaders and billboards, who underlines mistakes in letters from the council, or the bank, or her child’s school. Who gets excited about the possibility of a bit of research to find out the origin of a quote, or the root of a word, and above all, who really wants your work to work. I’ve been editing and proofreading all my professional life. I’m a PhD research student working on an academic thesis, so I'm happy with complex data, research techniques and academic referencing. I’m also an audio-proofer, so I work with production houses to ensure that the audiobook is as accurate as the hardback, paperback or e-published versions. If you'd like me to help by proofreading your writing, get in touch and I’ll give you an estimate so we can work together to get it right. |
